One of the most common problems that surveyors run across in doing these surveys are electrical systems that have either been jury-rigged by the owner, or an owner who hired Joe-the-Electrician down the street because Joe’s work is cheap. Joe is the guy who knows how to wire a house and thinks that boats are no different. The house business isn’t so good, so he switched to boats. Much to the consternation of the owner, when the insurance surveyor comes along, he ends up handing the owner a long, and frequently costly, list of things that need to be corrected. Even more seriously though, is what substandard wiring can do to your overall system, not the least of which are chronic battery drain, frequent system faults, or even causing electrolysis and fires. In the last month alone, I caught two boats that were about to go up in flames, and one that actually did catch fire during the course of a survey.

What we did know was that we didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on a battery and solar system until we lived the lifestyle awhile. It took us two years on the road to determine we wanted to upgrade to an electrical system that would allow us to live for about a week at a time two weeks at most without electrical hook-ups. It was never our intent to be serious boondockers, but it takes a pretty good system even to make it a week without having to be really conservative.

Grid-tied inverters are electrical devices that match the utility sine wave, and allow you to feed your solar-generated electricity into your local utility grid. The device will automatically shut down in case of a power outage for safety reasons. A grid tie inverter cannot provide backup power. You will be able to use the electricity that was generated by your solar powered system to power your home appliances from the solar generator to the power grid, from the grid to your appliances. Once excess electric is generated by your system, you will see your meter spinning backwards, and will either get credit on your next power bill or get a check from your local utility company.
A question often asked by homeowners is this: Why do some people get checks and others only get credit on their next power bill? This discrepancy is the result of different power selling policies employed by various electric companies. Depending on the electric company that your house is connected to, you can either get a check or a credit. In either case, the company is obligated to take your excess energy. How does a grid tie inverter work?
Aluminum Wiring Into a Service Panel
I have had many questions regarding this very situation over the years, and here are some examples of questions received recently. I have a plug that went out. Did not kick breaker off. And now the hot and common leads are both putting out volts? I often wonder why the neutral has no voltage although a circuit is energised.
For example, some panels have a main breaker and some are just main lug. This, and other factors, can determine where the 2 hots, neutral and ground that make up your 4 wires will go. Typically, your 2 hot leads are connected to the main breaker and the meter itself.

Tip by E ScottD on Step 14 a few seconds ago Upvote 0 A couple of things, that I can see that would help your project would be to install a ground rod on the generator or the box leading to the generator grounding the circuit. It could preclude instances of getting shocked if touching something energized a hotplate and a device already installed in the home the stove, range hood etc.. Adding a ground rod would help.

Blow dryer —1, Solutions to overloads The immediate solution to an overload is simple: Shift some plug-in devices from the overloaded circuit to another general-purpose circuit. Then flip the circuit breaker back on or replace the fuse and turn stuff back on. First you have to locate outlets on another general-purpose circuit. Then you have to find a convenient way to reach it. Resist the temptation to solve the problem with an extension cord.

Mar 31, · How to install a subpanel the right way. In this video we’re installing a subpanel in the house where the main panel is coming in. So you wouldn’t need to install a separate grounding rod.
I am using the grey PVC On the north and south side of the house, I have created two nearly identical units It sounds like I have the right stuff, at least for the 1″ PVC I’m not totally sure I got the right part for the 2″ conduit. Then I would hook up those 4 20A circuits into the basement panel and re-route those wires in the basement crawl to the basement sub panel. I’ve only been a little unsure of how to attached the cup side to the box.
It appears you can run short screws into the box on the cup end, but gluing would make it watertight. It was advertised as a watertight unit I better look more closely at it. It might be that I accidentally bought a 2″ fitting for attaching to the top of a main panel or subpanel box The right-most image see below shows something similar to what I bought I think the fitting I’m really looking for would be a large 2″ version of what is show in the left-most picture left side of pic below.
Let me know if that’s correct or not. Could I still use that, but mounted on the bottom?
