September 10, Vacuum Advance questions February 27 at 5: I’m glad I found this message board! I recently had a c 4V with C6 Auto rebuilt, the engine is stock and in great shape, but the secondary systems are in worse shape. Last week, I bought an Edelbrock Performer cfm Carb, and got that running ok now. I also got a Pertronix ignition just to bring a little more simplicity to the setup.
Carburetor Fuel Line Kits
The carburetor has been the Pandora’s box of performance bolt-ons. They’ve never been thought of as easy to tune or fun to run. They leaked, they ran inconsistently, and it almost took a Master’s degree in fuel system engineering to figure one out.
Category: DynoTech Sunday, May 10, DynoTech: Fuel Volatility–how it affects performance. FUEL VOLATILITY Jim Czekala, DynoTech Research “Gasoline doesn’t burn. The vapor of the liquid gasoline burns, and that’s extremely important to remember when you are thinking about controlling combustion in a gasoline engine”.
I don’t understand the inner working of a carb enough to make any major adjustments jets, metering rods, etc. Said he was never happy with it, so ditched the whole setup. He cleaned it up and stored it. I’ve been adjusting mixture screws for days, and I can’t get it to even idle. I though the float settings were the cause, but even after proper adjustment, I’ve got nothing. It sounds like it wants to run, but then it dies.
I’ve got no idea where to even start??? I also just added an HEI.

Be sure to save the illustrations separately. The opinions expressed here are my experiences, and your experiences may vary. I don’t put myself forward as the world’s leading expert on Holleys, but I do have some helpful ideas. In some cases, I may not be able to answer specific questions, but I’ll do my best.
Nice carb that fired up first try. I used this on my corvette and it works great. It may have lost a little HP but it runs better and the fuel economy is also slightly better.
Menu Prior to Build Several years ago and about 17, miles, I replaced the 2. I in Kansas City direct swap for 2. At that time, I had the heads rebuilt and ports polished, installed a Crane PowerMax cam, Magnum 1. Ran great until the fuel injection problems hit. You need some good mechanical and electrical skills and a good repair manual for your car. Follow instructions that come with every part, and be prepared to get frustrated finding everything you need.
Also, this setup does not support the cruise control. During this procedure, do not cut off any harness connectors. Easier to look at a photo then try to remember how everything was. If its been a while, now would be a good time to remove the radiator, take it to a radiator shop and have it cleaned out and leak tested.
You can leave the fan cage in the car. Next, remove the serpentine belt and check the tensioner. If worn, replace it.

The 9 cap is available at your local GM dealer. Ask for AC Delco type RC32 part and a 10 cap is available at most autoparts store under a Stant part number , if they don’t have it, have them order it for you. The lower pressure rated caps are not carried by the store much but they are available. Wright One item that makes the radiator leak is using the wrong Pressure Cap. Should be 9 pounds no greater than 10 pounds.
Left screw for left side of carb Right screw for right side of carb FUEL INLET for 3/8” hose (Except marine you will hook the vacuum hose from the distributor to the passenger side vacuum port on linkages will hook up. Install the proper throttle and transmission linkage for .
I am by no means an expert on fuel. And I am confident that I have seized more pistons in those 28 years than any other human on any continent. Gallon jugs of industrial strength muriatic acid, used to dissolve aluminum smeared onto cylinder walls by pistons trying to grow larger than the bore size , are cheaper when you buy cases of four! And we now listen to knock while testing so damage from deto is now rare. A combination of low velocity airflow from huge carbs and low volatility fuel requires lots of engine heat to create adequate vaporization.
The actual Reid Vapor Pressure of the fuel is an indication of the presence of the front ends. DrumPreserve also is planning to sell portable RVP test equipment to enable racers to test their own fuel, or test fuel before purchasing it. How can that be? But what happens when the fuel leaves the refineries?

I rebuilt engine, new intake and eldebrock , won’t run smooth, how does the vacuum lines of distributor hook to carb. I put it back original but new carb just won’t run, timing and all correct. Hopefully, it will help, but don’t take it as a final solution I’m still tweaking, and probably will be for the next 20 years. I have an Edelbrock carb, which is leaned down one step stock, it idled rough; lean, the idle smoothed out. I’m currently using the yellow springs, but might go back to orange.
Apr 17, · I have an old Nissan that I replaced the motor with a horsepower I am not sure if the vacuum lines are correct. Or if I need to rejet the carb. The problem is at high rpm it seems to be starving for gas. I have a electric fuel pump in the tank and the mechanical pump on the motor. The mechanical pump is new. I do not have the manual for the carb so I was guessing on the : Resolved.
Sometimes they get pinched or broken inside the insulation and you can’t see it. I’ve got an 87 V10 pickup with an 89 motor in it and I’ve got all kinds of little problems with it. Little things like stalling when you go into reverse, stalling at traffic lights, etc. Good luck and post your results! You know, I would stick with the TBI. I’ve got enough bottom end torque to pull tree stumps if I can get the traction! Post Reply I love my Chevy Chevette!

Turn the key-with your foot off the gas pedal-and within three spins of the crank, the engine jumps to life before settling into a steady rpm idle. Gino adds that part-throttle tip-in under light load was pretty good with the old double-pumper, and the Pro-Flo is a close match. Now it goes 7. You just drop it in with the No.
Edelbrock Performer Series 4 barrel carbs have proven themselves to be easy to tune with great drivability. Whether you need to replace an aging stock carb or are looking for a performance carb to top off your hot rod, this Edelbrock carb is the best choice for performance and value.
Just checking in after driving my ’73 with the Edelbrock for a week. This car has never run so well, even when new I took a mile drive on Thanksgiving, and with a mix of city and highway 80mph driving, I got 13 mpg. I now have a smooth and very quiet idle, and at wot, it really opens up and screams. The TQ that was on the car was in pretty bad shape, and my attempt to rebuild it revealed some bad patch work in the plastic body. I must have been getting mpg in the city, might as well just dump the gas on the street I’m still getting the choke dialed in, but all in all, I am very very happy with this.
I’d highly recommend this swap if you’re having unresolvable trouble with your TQ. My ’73 has the TQ carb, and after I had it professionally rebuild I get mpg in city type driving, and on the highway doing mph. I thought about getting the Edelbrock, but I heard they were over rated. After reading about your success I guess it’s a good investment after all.
Question from Charles I am putting a Edelbrock Performer carburetor with matching intake on a ‘ Can someone hold my hand here, I had car apart a long time and would have a hard time if all the hook ups were the same as original. Where do I need to plug or splice a vacuum line?
Edelbrock Carburetors On Imperials
Dec 17, There are manual choke conversion kits that include a plastic cap with a lever that replaces the black cap with the wires in your photos. The trick to these kits is to make sure the caps that included are of the same diameter as the cap they are replacing. Sometimes they are not, and the fit will be loose, causing the cap to eventually fall off. Be aware that there is a vacuum port on the electric choke models that must be plugged when converting to manual choke.
Going the other way, from manual choke to electric choke, Edelbrock says this is not possible because of the lack of the vacuum port on the manual choke models. The proper way to seal up port openings that won’t accept a nipple is to jam a small lead ball into them.
Nov 04, · It is not connected because that model Edelbrock has an electric choke. that is the black circular unit with the wires. the is the same carb w/manual choke.
In a squarebore, the bores are closer to the same size, though, in some squarebore carbs, like cfm Holleys, the primaries may be noticeably smaller than the secondaries. However, even then the bores share the same centerline. Many aftermarket intakes, such as mine, and the Edelbrock Performer and RPM, etc, are “dual pattern” intakes the area where the carb bolts on looks like a butterfly.
Either a squarebore OR spreadbore can be physically be mounted on them with no adaptors. Carter Thermoquads, Rochester Quadrajets, and Holley ‘s, ‘s, and ‘s are spreadbores. If the intakes are true squarebore intakes four individual holes or true spreadbore intakes again, four individual holes, though of different size , you cannot really bolt a squarebore carb on a spreadbore intake and vise versa.
In the case of putting the squarebore on the spreadbore intake, the primary bores of a spreadbore, though small, are spread further out than the primaries of a squarebore. The squarebore primaries of the carb would not line up well with the holes in the manifold. Also, most spreadbore primaries are smaller than most squarebore primaries, so even if they did line up, the manifold would present a sudden, constriction.
In the case of putting the spreadbore on the squarebore intake, the secondaries of a squarebore intake are smaller than those of a spreadbore carb, so in that case, you’d have significant flow problems. Again, you’d have the problem of the primaries not lining up right. They are vacuum secondary carbs so you can use your secondary diaphragm kit.

Car Year, Make, Model: Tuning carb with a vacuum gauge Hook up your vacuum guage to the intake manifold port of the carb sucks at idle. Set you rpm about where you want it to be. Adjust your idle mixture screws to give you the highest manifold vacuum reading which should be the highest idle rpm reading with the throttle butterflies closed. Re-set your idle rpm.
May 28, · Edelbrock Performer Series and Thunder Series AVS carbs are the most reliable, trouble-free carbs available today, however proper installation and tuning will ensure that you get all the.
Please follow the post completely for details of the process. Throttle response is not delayed, I expected it to have a delay like most modern fuel injection cars do. Throttle response is as instant as a carburetor. No more high to low engine rev at startup, it starts and stays right at rpm. Best part is, I can change this with the handheld controller. Engine has never ran this consistently cool before.

All About Car Restoration How to Use and Interpret a Vacuum Gauge Few tools or test devices are more useful and versatile than a vacuum gauge, yet very few hobbyists own one. A vacuum gauge can tell as much about the internal and external workings of an engine as the combination of a voltmeter, compression gauge, stethoscope and timing light. An engine’s vacuum readings can tell an awful lot about its running parameters, provided you know how to read the gauge in the first place.
Unfortunately, most vacuum gauge manufacturers don’t provide easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams to help users interpret gauge readings, rendering the gauges themselves virtually useless. We’re here to change all that, so follow along with us on a tour of vacuum gauge readings and we’ll show you all the neat things you can do with one.
