Edelbrock Performer CFM 4 Barrel Carburetor, Electric Choke

September 10, Vacuum Advance questions February 27 at 5: I’m glad I found this message board! I recently had a c 4V with C6 Auto rebuilt, the engine is stock and in great shape, but the secondary systems are in worse shape. Last week, I bought an Edelbrock Performer cfm Carb, and got that running ok now. I also got a Pertronix ignition just to bring a little more simplicity to the setup.

I don’t understand the inner working of a carb enough to make any major adjustments jets, metering rods, etc. Said he was never happy with it, so ditched the whole setup. I though the float settings were the cause, but even after proper adjustment, I’ve got nothing. It sounds like it wants to run, but then it dies.

The 9 cap is available at your local GM dealer. Ask for AC Delco type RC32 part and a 10 cap is available at most autoparts store under a Stant part number , if they don’t have it, have them order it for you. Sometimes they get pinched or broken inside the insulation and you can’t see it. I’ve got an 87 V10 pickup with an 89 motor in it and I’ve got all kinds of little problems with it. Just checking in after driving my ’73 with the Edelbrock for a week. This car has never run so well, even when new I took a mile drive on Thanksgiving, and with a mix of city and highway 80mph driving, I got 13 mpg. I now have a smooth and very quiet idle, and at wot, it really opens up and screams. The TQ that was on the car was in pretty bad shape, and my attempt to rebuild it revealed some bad patch work in the plastic body. I must have been getting mpg in the city, might as well just dump the gas on the street I’m still getting the choke dialed in, but all in all, I am very very happy with this.

I’d highly recommend this swap if you’re having unresolvable trouble with your TQ. My ’73 has the TQ carb, and after I had it professionally rebuild I get mpg in city type driving, and on the highway doing mph. I thought about getting the Edelbrock, but I heard they were over rated. After reading about your success I guess it’s a good investment after all.

Dec 17, There are manual choke conversion kits that include a plastic cap with a lever that replaces the black cap with the wires in your photos. The trick to these kits is to make sure the caps that included are of the same diameter as the cap they are replacing. Sometimes they are not, and the fit will be loose, causing the cap to eventually fall off. Be aware that there is a vacuum port on the electric choke models that must be plugged when converting to manual choke.

Going the other way, from manual choke to electric choke, Edelbrock says this is not possible because of the lack of the vacuum port on the manual choke models. The proper way to seal up port openings that won’t accept a nipple is to jam a small lead ball into them.

In a squarebore, the bores are closer to the same size, though, in some squarebore carbs, like cfm Holleys, the primaries may be noticeably smaller than the secondaries. However, even then the bores share the same centerline. Many aftermarket intakes, such as mine, and the Edelbrock Performer and RPM, etc, are “dual pattern” intakes the area where the carb bolts on looks like a butterfly.

Either a squarebore OR spreadbore can be physically be mounted on them with no adaptors. Carter Thermoquads, Rochester Quadrajets, and Holley ‘s, ‘s, and ‘s are spreadbores. If the intakes are true squarebore intakes four individual holes or true spreadbore intakes again, four individual holes, though of different size , you cannot really bolt a squarebore carb on a spreadbore intake and vise versa.

In the case of putting the squarebore on the spreadbore intake, the primary bores of a spreadbore, though small, are spread further out than the primaries of a squarebore. The squarebore primaries of the carb would not line up well with the holes in the manifold. Also, most spreadbore primaries are smaller than most squarebore primaries, so even if they did line up, the manifold would present a sudden, constriction.

In the case of putting the spreadbore on the squarebore intake, the secondaries of a squarebore intake are smaller than those of a spreadbore carb, so in that case, you’d have significant flow problems. Again, you’d have the problem of the primaries not lining up right. They are vacuum secondary carbs so you can use your secondary diaphragm kit.
